A Message to USMMA Cadets Going on Sea Year:
Your best interests and the best interests of your Academy Training Representative (ATR) are not aligned.
Your ATR cares about:
a) His paycheck, and
b) keeping the https://www.usmma.edu/academics/departments/sea-year program running.
He keeps the Sea Year program running by keeping the shipping companies happy.
Examples of things that do NOT make shipping companies happy:
1) Cadets complaining about being harassed
2) Cadets complaining about being sexually harassed or sexually assaulted
3) Cadets filing lawsuits against shipping companies
4) Cadets attempting to assert their legal rights as employees, credentialed mariners & AMERICANS.
When Cadets try to do these things, your ATR's job is to make the "problem" go away.
To the ATR, the problem is not the scumbag licensed officer who sexually harassed you or sexually assaulted you.
To your ATR, the problem is the cadet victim.
You are the problem.
If your ATR will not stand up for you, who will?
